Germany: Pork Production to Increase Slightly in the First Half of 2024

For the first time since 2016, pork output increased slightly in the first half of the year. According to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), German slaughterhouses slaughtered nearly 3.4 million tonnes of meat in the first half of 2024, up 1.3% from the same period last year. A total of 24 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses, and 344.3 million chickens, turkeys and ducks were slaughtered in the first half of 2024.

For the first time since 2016, pork output increased slightly in the first half of the year.

In the first six months of the year, German slaughterhouses slaughtered 21.9 million pigs, up slightly by 0.4% (+78,100 heads) compared to the previous year.

Of these, 96.6% (21.2 million heads) were of domestic origin (+0.4% or +86,600 heads compared to the previous year) and the remaining 734,000 heads were imported pigs (-1.1%). Accordingly, the ratio of imported pigs to the total number of pigs slaughtered was 3.4% in the first half of 2024.

The amount of pork slaughtered in the first half of 2024 was 2.1 million tonnes, up 1.1% (+22,400 tonnes) compared to the same period last year. For the first time since 2016, pork production increased slightly in the first half of the year, since the number of pigs slaughtered in Germany has been continuously decreasing. However, in the first half of 2016, an additional 7.4 million heads were slaughtered, and the output reached 2.8 million tonnes (+661,400 tonnes of pork compared to 2024).

Pork accounts for the largest proportion of total meat production.

For many years, pork has accounted for the largest share of total meat production in Germany. In the first half of 2024, 62% of meat produced was pork. This was followed by poultry at 23% and beef at 14.6%. Lamb, goat and horse meat accounted for only about 0.4% of total production.
